Beyond Basics – Helping educate children and inspire community.
Beyond Basics is a school-centered program that brings targeted reading, writing and other literacy and self-expression programs to students in grades pre-K through 12.
The work done by Beyond Basics staff and volunteers has been proven to help school children in economically disadvantaged neighborhoods change their destinies by significantly raising their reading proficiency scores and providing developmental and emotional growth opportunities. Typically, we get children reading at grade level or above in six weeks. 100% of the children we work with show improvement in literacy. We have done this work for more than a decade in several schools in the DPS system.
Going "beyond the basics" adds the all-important ingredient of interest to a child's education.
We often ask the question, "Where will these children be in 5 or 10 years if someone does not do something now?" Together we can help turn the lives of these children around.
Beyond Basics is a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation offering reading, writing and expanding horizons enrichment programs to students attending public schools in Metropolitan Detroit.
Our program is firmly based on the understanding that children, exposed to educational curricula beyond the basic school system offerings, will obtain higher scores on exams and have a greater chance of achieving excellence beyond their public school careers.
We work closely with school personnel and administrators. All educational intervention takes place during the school day and includes the part time operation of a publishing center. There is no cost to the schools, the district or individual students.
Please join us in our endeavor. You can make a difference!
