Media Statement for Beyond Basics Family Literacy Center at the Durfee Innovation Society

Attributed to Pamela Good, president and executive director of Beyond Basics

“We are thrilled to be a key partner in the Durfee Innovation Society, which houses our Beyond Basics Family Literacy Center. This center is an extension of the work we are doing in the Detroit Public Schools Community District to improve literacy.

“Our goal in joining this effort is to broaden our reach into the neighborhood to provide opportunities to children who have dropped out or graduated without knowing how to read. Our Beyond Basics Family Literacy Center will also allow us to provide GED and SAT prep and writing assistance to help bridge the gap. As the name of our center suggests, we serve the whole family, including parents who want to learn how to read.

“We’ve known all along that our work to get children reading doesn’t stop once we teach them this essential life skill. Providing literacy to these children is just the tip of the iceberg. The Beyond Basics Family Literacy Center will give us the space to support the continual development of these children and families.”
