Tis the Season of Joy;
Beyond Basics Counts its Blessings
by Pam Good
Tis the season of joy and at Beyond Basics, we are counting our many blessings from the past year. We are especially thankful for people like you, who have supported us day in and day out. Teaching children to read and unlocking an education for them is one of the best gifts
you could possibly ever give.
This week we had a wonderful visit from Elijah Craft, who was featured in Keith Famie’s short film that showed how Beyond Basics literacy programs change lives. Elijah came to our offices to meet with Crain’s Detroit Business reporter Chad Livengood to update us on his life after successfully graduating from Beyond Basics’ literacy program. Earlier this year, Chad featured Elijah’s story in Crain’s Detroit Business. The story really touched people and had an immediate impact for us – we received a sizeable donation and One Detroit: Elijah’s Story was broadcast on Detroit Public Television.
You will be thrilled to learn Elijah is thriving – he successfully completed his first semester in college at Waldorf University in Iowa! It was so heartwarming to see how much Elijah has grown and learned since we first met him in the fall of 2016.
“Beyond Basics helped me so much I wanted to cry the first few weeks I was in college. I thought, where would I have been?” said Elijah. “Before the program, I wouldn’t have made it.”
Elijah shared that school isn’t easy, but without our program college would have been impossible.
He has big dreams now that he has learned to read. He still plans to major in business and come back to Detroit to help the homeless and other vulnerable children. He’s mentoring his younger brothers, cousins and students at Central High School to make sure they stay on the right path to follow in his footsteps. He has also found his voice and speaks up when he sees things happening that shouldn’t be.
“If I stay quiet, nothing is going to change,” said Elijah.
I hope this story helps you see that your contribution is truly the gift that keeps on giving. Teaching Elijah to read has impacted an entire community.
Thank you for believing in what we do and helping spread the word that literacy is for everyone. By helping us teach more children to read with our tried and true methods, these children will become adults who will thrive rather than struggle. As 2017 draws to a close and as you are making your year-end gifts, we ask that you consider a gift to Beyond Basics.
Please know you are in our thoughts and prayers during this special season and we look forward to all that we will accomplish together next year!
Joy Road is the journey I began that has led to Beyond Basics. It all started when I took Exit 9 to Joy Road years ago to help out at a school in Detroit.
Give the gift of reading this season!
Any level of donation will make a significant difference in the life of a child! Please consider making a tax-deductible donation before the end of 2017.
Sponsor a child for a year in the Scholars Reading Program for $42 a month or $500for a year.
