National Reading Month Officially Begins This Week
by Pam Good
The importance of learning to read cannot be stressed enough. If you cannot read, you cannot be educated and without an education the future is bleak.
Reading is the key that unlocks the future potential of children. In Detroit and other places like it, literacy is a compound problem since it is generational.
- Nearly half of adults in Detroit are functionally illiterate.
- 13 million children, more than half of the children in this country, will not hear a bedtime story tonight.
- If their parents cannot read, they may enter school having never been read to at all.
- By age three, children from the poorest families have heard more than 30 million fewer words than those from the wealthiest families.
- If a child is not reading at grade level by the end of first grade, there is an 88 percent chance he or she will not be reading at grade level by the end of fourth grade.
Unless he or she gets help from Beyond Basics! Reading is a solvable disability. Just because a fourth grader or a seventh grader or even a teenager cannot read, does not mean they cannot learn to read, become educated and begin to make up for lost time.
We are the solution. Our tutors working one on one can teach children of all ages how to read at grade level in record time – six to ten weeks. You can help us scale it and spread it.
Beyond Basics is officially kicking off National Reading Month in March with a Literacy Summit on Thursday, March 1 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Detroit’s Mumford High School. You can still join us for a discussion with community leaders and a media panel on the state of literacy in our city and region.
Then, on March 16 at 6 p.m. we are hosting our annual Coming Together for Children Fundraiser at the Detroit Athletic Club. Please contact Johanna Zwally at: (248) 408-1735 or email@example.com to RSVP for either event.
Together, we can get more children reading.
Joy Road is the journey I began that has led to Beyond Basics. It all started when I took Exit 9 to Joy Road years ago to help out at a school in Detroit.
