Helpful Tips
Ways to build reading skills:
- Model good oral reading (reading out loud).
- Read together (Supported Reading). When student reads and simultaneously hears the text it helps his/her fluency.
- Use recorded materials. Try to find a book on tape in which the student can listen and follow along.
- Repeated Reading. Reading the same passage over several times can increase fluency and allow the reader to focus on meaningful reading.
Listen to the Child Read:
- Is the child aware of the errors he/she is making?
- Is the child using appropriate expression and phrasing while reading (remember if not this interferes with comprehension)?
- What is the reading rate, minus errors? (How many words per minute?)
- Do the errors tend to fall in the beginning, middle or end of words?
- Does he/she put letters in the words that are not there?
