Beyond Basics and The Foundation for Global Literacy Announce Partnership

Nearly 3,000 JROTC students’ reading levels assessed; tutoring provided if needed

DETROIT – To kick off National Reading Month in March, Beyond Basics and The Foundation for Global Literacy will announce a partnership on March 1 during a Literacy Summit at Detroit’s Mumford High School. The partnership allows Beyond Basics to assess the reading levels of nearly 3,000 Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corp (JROTC) students and provide tutoring if needed.

Col. George S. Pettigrew, director of Army Instruction, JROTC, and founder of The Foundation for Global Literacy, realized that some JROTC cadets were not reading at the right level and was introduced to Beyond Basics as a solution to this problem. Beyond Basics tutors working one on one can teach children of all ages how to read at grade level in record time – six to ten weeks.

“I was raised in the heart of Chicago’s South side and the 7th of 10 children, so I know first-hand the challenges associated with living in poverty,” said Pettigrew. “We will get help for any JROTC cadet who needs it since reading is so crucial to success. Our goal is that no cadet is left behind. It just made sense to partner with Beyond Basics since they’re already successful getting children reading in the district.”

Col. Pettigrew is currently raising funds by applying for grants, appealing to foundations and corporations, and holding fundraisers so they can assess and tutor nearly 3,000 JROTC students in more than 18 Detroit Public Schools. His long-term goal is to have a congressional line item for his foundation and the Beyond Basics program so that the program can be implemented on a larger scale and flow to other schools. In the future, he plans to roll out the program to adult veterans who also need to learn to read.

“We are excited to work with JROTC cadets and to partner with the Foundation for Global Literacy. Our goal is that we get all children reading at grade level,” said Pamela Good, president and executive director of Beyond Basics. “We just need to scale the program and spread it.”
