Beyond Basics Celebrates Impactful Year of Battling Illiteracy at Fall Event
UHY LLP Honored as 2017 Partner of the Year and Mary Dunn as 2017 Volunteer of the Year
DETROIT – Beyond Basics volunteers, partners, and supporters gathered in Detroit on Nov. 9 to raise funds for Beyond Basics, a child-centered, literacy focused nonprofit serving metropolitan Detroit.
During its annual Fall Event, guests enjoyed a strolling dinner, beautiful artwork and touring an historic home in the Boston Edison District while learning how to contribute to Beyond Basics’ mission to eradicate illiteracy. Beyond Basics Chairman of the Board, Jack Aronson, announced UHY LLP as its 2017 “Partner of the Year” and Mary Dunn as its “2017 Volunteer of the Year.”
Beyond Basics honored UHY for championing the Beyond Basics mission over the past school year. In addition to UHY team members mentoring students, UHY team members also actively participate in the Caring For Kids program to provide students with coats, books and school supplies.
“We appreciate all that UHY does for Beyond Basics and the children we reach with our programs,” said Pamela Good, president and executive director of Beyond Basics. “Without partners like UHY, we would not be able to impact so many in our community.”
Loni Winkler, principal at UHY, accepted the award on behalf of Gordon Follmer. “We are honored to be recognized by Beyond Basics and thankful for the opportunity to help make a difference in so many children’s lives,” said Winkler.
Beyond Basics also honored Royal Oak resident Mary Dunn as the 2017 Volunteer of the Year for her tireless efforts to help children learn to read. Dunn was thrilled to accept the award. “As long as I get to work with children who need to learn the survival skill of reading, I’m happy,” said Dunn. “I’m passionate that all children learn to read and your support allows Beyond Basics to grow and broaden their scope. My first three tutoring sessions all ended in tears. We stuck with it and chipped away at the fear of failure. By the next school year, the young woman I tutored ran down the hallway to announce that she was on the honor roll, so it doesn’t get any better than that.”
Dunn enjoyed working with the children so much that she has now turned her volunteering into full time employment as a tutor with Beyond Basics.
“We are delighted to honor Mary as our volunteer of the year,” said Good. “She has volunteered for many years, and enjoyed working with the children so much she recently joined our team as an employee. Her dedication to our students and our mission shines through every interaction, with both students and colleagues alike.”
