Mumford High Students and Artist Alex Cook to Paint

Inspirational “You Are Loved” Mural on Oct. 4

DETROIT, Oct. 3, 2017 – Beyond Basics, a literacy non-profit serving students in Detroit Public Schools, partnered with artist Alex Cook to create four inspirational murals at Burton International, Sampson Webber Academy, Mumford Academy and Mumford High. Detroit Public school children will help the artist by painting within Cook’s sketches.

“These murals will create a sense of pride and accomplishment for the students and will serve as a daily reminder that anything is possible,” said Pam Good, Beyond Basics president and executive director. “At Beyond Basics we know that Literacy Is For Everyone! and are changing destiny through education.”

Each school had the option of choosing a different theme: You Are Loved, You Are Needed, You Are Important, You Are Beautiful, and You Can Do It. Sampson Webber Academy is the first school to create the mural and chose “You Can Do It.” Cook will visit and work with children of all ages on murals in the other schools for the rest of October.
