Publishing Center
Philosophy
We at Beyond Basics meet many of the following national standards through the process of writing at our Publishing Centers providing many opportunities for growth in both reading and writing.
Language Arts National Standards
The vision guiding these standards is that all students must have the opportunities and resources to develop the language skills they need to pursue life's goals and to participate fully as informed productive members of society. These standards assume that literacy growth begins before children enter school as they experience and experiment with literacy activities – reading and writing, and associating spoken words with their graphic representations.
“I knew that my students were brilliant. They just needed the right avenue to help uncover it. You helped polish the diamonds in the rough”
Program
Beyond Basics has pioneered the concept of On-Site Publishing Centers. At the Publishing Centers, children’s hand-written stories are transformed into typed, hardcover “books” made of sturdy fabric-covered mat board, which can be re-read and cherished. Volunteers work with the child in the Centers to explain and correct grammar and spelling errors before the stories are typed, reinforcing classroom writing instruction. This very popular activity is available to all students regardless of skill or grade level.
