Reading Program
Beyond Basics has developed a reading program in which 100% of the student participants improve their reading abilities. 95% of the students enrolled made advancements in their grade level reading. Our program is unique in that it integrates a variety of methods and specifically targets the population of students that Beyond Basics seeks to serve.
Methods of Tutoring

F.A.S.T. is an acronym for Foundations of Analysis, Synthesis, and Translation, three actions required by the brain during reading. It combines the best of systematic phonics, auditory processing, and literature-based instruction to create a streamlined, multi-sensory program that includes immediate reading application with high interest, phonetically controlled books. The program works well with one-on-one tutoring, but can be easily implemented into small group instruction.

Brain Gym supports self-awareness and the ease of living and learning through safe, simple and effective movement. Through various activities, Brain Gym promotes play and the joy of learning, draws out and honors innate intelligence, builds awareness regarding the value of movement in daily life, and emphasizes the ability to notice and respond to movement-based needs. It also encourages self-responsibility, leaves each participant appreciated and valued, empowers the individual to better take charge of his own learning, encourage creativity and self-expression and inspires an appreciation for music, physical education and the fine arts.
In our Reading Program students are tutored for a one-hour intensive session five days a week. The program focuses on phonetic strategies and integrates those skills through reinforcing them with books coordinated to the concepts the students are learning. These strategies help children learn the sound systems necessary to decode the majority of words in the English language. The skills and concepts that are taught each day are reinforced through a variety of techniques, such as spelling and reading non-sense words. Students also read books that highlight the skills and techniques they have learned in their lesson for the day.
Beyond Basics also utilizes a variety of comprehension strategies that help students to recall what they have read.
Beyond Basics is also able to integrate volunteers or Reading Buddies into the Reading Program as well. Reading Buddies work with students who have graduated from the Reading Program to practice and reinforce the skills which they have learned in the program.
Beyond Basics has found this rigorous Reading Program to be absolutely successful. The majority of our students have achieved grade level reading or higher after six to eight weeks of this intensive one-on-one tutoring.
