Beyond Basics Reading Outcome
Year-Over-Year:
2008-2009 Executive Summary
The year-over-year combined assessment results from fall of 2008 through fall of 2009 for the Beyond Basic’s reading development program revealed solid gains in reading capabilities for the students who participated. The results are based on 98 students who made a commitment to the program from start to finish. Over the course of approximately 24 tutoring sessions students were able move from below grade level reading skills to at or above grade level reading capabilities. The enhancement these students realized in reading capability was across the board in fluency, word attack skills and comprehension. The mission of the program is to teach students who are not at a grade level reading proficiency the tools and techniques necessary to reach their goals, and as the results reveal, mission accomplished!
The participating students started the program reading between a 2nd and 3rd grade level. Upon completion of the program, on average, students moved into a 4th grade reading proficiency. Average fluency at the start of the program was 58 words per minute and was increased to 87 words per minute by the conclusion of the tutoring sessions. Word attack skills and comprehension also were elevated due to program participation. These advancements in comprehension, word attack and fluency scores indicate that these students should have continued reading success as they move out of the Beyond Basics tutoring application and become independent readers.
