“Be the Solution,” a social-impact campaign in partnership with Detroit Public Schools Community District, was formed at the request of DPSCD Superintendent Dr. Nikolai Vitti in response to a desperate need for improved literacy among the city’s high school students.
To accomplish our ambitious goal of tutoring 11,000 Detroit high school students that fall into the literacy gap, we need to raise $33 million.
Reading proficiency is critical to high schoolers as they enter adulthood and prepare for higher education, jobs in skilled trades and other paths to independence. A reading deficiency at this stage of their lives could be devastating.
“The real, immediate emergency is in our high schools. If students graduate and are illiterate, they are on an crash course to poverty."
This urgency drives our Be the Solution campaign so that together we can ensure the brightest outcomes for Detroit’s next generation of leaders.
“What makes Beyond Basics unique is that it’s truly research-based, gets to the heart of the problems with illiteracy, and attacks it in a coherent, strategic, comprehensive way.”
