A $1 million grant from General Motors Co. to nonprofit Beyond Basics will support literacy-building efforts for hundreds of high school students in Detroit Public Schools Community District.

With the GM grant, Beyond Basics has raised over $3 million or half of the goal it set for the first year of three-year, $33 million campaign launched in May 2019. The campaign, which has also drawn support from the Southfield-based DeRoy Testamentary Foundation and individuals, will fund intensive tutoring with 11,000 high school students in the district.
