Beyond Basics alumna Taylor Rice, who received tutoring services when she was a seventh grader and is now a Beyond Basics tutor, spoke at our Coming Together for Children event on June 23 at the Detroit Athletic Club. Addressing a packed room, she said her student experience ignited a love of reading that motivated her to grow. In her role as a tutor, she helps students develop as readers and utilize newfound confidence in pursuit of their own learning. When she reported that one of her students had recently moved two-and-a-half grades forward in reading, the room erupted in applause. “This program works wonders, and I am proof that it does,” Taylor Rice said.
